Clausiliidae of mainland China (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora)

Hartmut Nordsieck

General remarks

The clausiliid fauna of mainland China is very rich. In a revision of the Chinese Clausiliidae (Nordsieck 2001, 2002), the first since the basic work of Gredler, Heude, Moellendorff and O. Boettger hundred years ago, the number of species amounted to 138. Most species (134) were classified with the subfamily Phaedusinae, the remaining four with the subfamily Garnieriinae. In the few years since then the species number has increased to 185 (169 Phaedusinae species, 16 Garnieriinae species). The new species have already been described (Nordsieck 2003, 2005, 2007b) or are being prepared for description. The increase in this short span shows that the majority of Chinese species is still unknown.
If one compares the clausiliid fauna of mainland China with that of all Asia, about one third of all Phaedusinae species and nearly half of all Garnieriinae species have been found in this country. Therefore, concerning clausiliid diversity, mainland China is one of the most interesting areas of Asia. One has to consider, however, that the knowledge of the other countries of Asia diverges a lot; the well-known Japanese fauna contrasts with that of major parts of Southeast Asia which are nearly unexplored.
This discrepancy in knowledge is also true of the clausiliid faunae within mainland China itself. In this country Clausiliidae occur only south of a border-line which can be drawn from northern Sichuan along Shaanxi and Henan to Jiangsu. From this area only the faunae of the provinces Guangxi, Hubei and Sichuan (with Chongqing) are comparatively well-known. In contrast, the knowledge of the faunae of Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui and Zhejiang is insufficient, while those of the remaining provinces are nearly unknown.
A determination of Chinese clausiliid species is difficult, because there is no useful reference work for identification. In principle, the shell is sufficient for determination, not only because the shell morphology is characteristic for each species, but also because of only a few species the anatomy, especially the genital morphology, is known (Nordsieck 2007a: 67). The aim of this work is to give a survey on the Chinese clausiliids by the characteristics of their genera and a list of their species, with information on their distribution. Collectors and other interested persons are thus enabled to determine at least the genus a species belongs to. Subsequently, they can try to identify the species by studying the respective literature and reliable voucher material of species of that genus kept in the collection of a museum.
If using shell morphology for determination, one should know how species are distinguished, i. e. the characters of taxonomic importance. As is also the case with other clausiliids, a determination of Chinese clausiliids is not possible without studying their closing apparatus which is only present in adult specimens. Its structure and the respective terms are presented in Nordsieck 2007a (: 177-178). In Chinese clausiliids especially the inferior lamella, the palatal plicae and the clausilium plate are taxonomically important.

Systematic list
(Provinces with type locality in bold)

The two subfamilies occurring in mainland China, Phaedusinae and Garnieriinae, are easily distinguished by the characters of the aperture (Nordsieck 2007a: 11, 13). In the following the genera of both subfamilies are characterized by shell morphology, and the species, with information on their distribution, are listed. A list of synonyms is added for each subfamily.
